May 15 Sagehen Creek, 3mi. NW Hobart Mills, Nevada Co., Calif.
L.colony willows below main dam. Many chickadees calling nearby. Two snowplants 5" high. Remains of a yearling in poor condition found scattered over 30 circle at water's edge half way between 2:41 A. Several large asp felled out of reach in pond below shack. blend. Just above Sagehen's mouth at Little Truckee R. 3 PM. Heard about beaver dams here from Al Jones on last field trip of the Ichthyology class and I found 4 here. They're made entirely of willows - no asp growing in sight.

Took shot at 3:30 PM of lowest dam which is about 1' high. Also one of heavy will-ow use between 2 dams. 3:50 PM. came on dead buck caught on some willows half-way across creek. Right flank torn open, intestines hanging way out. Rubbings ¾-1" long in P4 three-cusped, one molar coming in, no sign of 3rd. 3 P's l2d M in in upper jaw, no more evident. Coyote tracks in mud along S shore. Deer + evidence appeared fresh. Pulled an inch-long caterpillar like worm out of his mouth yellowish-white, segmented.
