21 June Jagehen Creek, Nevada Co., Calif.
ably farther below water level+
on the side where the water
is quite deep, probably now
at least 5' in some spots.
Even now when water in the creek is
so high, it is very clear + doesn't
carry any silt to speak of. The
bottom right next to the house
where current is presumably
lowest is gravelly and doesn't
seem to have any of the silt
deposit supposed to be character-
istic of beaver ponds. Maybe that
is only characteristic of old ones.
Both sampling of this pond will
be interesting. Aspen surrounding
this pond are extremely plenti-
ful in all sizes. In a couple
of places they occur in stands
from the stream right on up
the hillside for 30 or 40 yds. They
can't dig canals to the distant trees
so it will be interesting to note
how far they will go from the
pond to cut trees. The dam seems
to be in fair condition but, as
we noticed in May, it's hard
