Aug 26 Sage Hen Creek, 3 mi. NW Hobart Mills, Nevada Co, Calif.
U. colony loop greatly expanded downstream. Much fresh
work on next higher dam. Set traps at 4.
Arrived on seat 6:10, 7:05 large beaver swam
down from below deadfall dam & dove into lodge.
Acted as if R. forepaw injured. 7:25 beaver
appeared in pond, swam over to spillway where
my trap was, hesitated, swam back a little,
floated, swam over to another spill way, to cross
& disappear downstream. 7:40 small one app. in
pond, swam toward S. side, fed, entered lodge,
left lodge & approached spillway trap but then
turned & went S. along dam. Heard but
didn't see another one dive into lodge. 7:50
a small one seen swimming under-water to
lodge. 8:05 beaver left lodge & swam over
to the trap a couple of times and swam
right over it! but it didn't go off. Getting
very dark. Think trigger had slipped & fallen
over a little so that he didn't strike it
with his foot. Also heard what have been
may
beaver "calls" - a hybrid between a cry and a moo.
Left at 8:10 & checked traps. No luck, set hooks.
Aug 27 More cirro-cumulus clouds & a fair SW breeze.
Heard 2 or 3 nutria/nders at 10 AM in tall pines
of N. side, saw 2. Began marking trees
and noted where beaver went 60' up slope
past a dozen 2-inchers and others of different
