Hall 1953 137 Aug 26 Sage Hen Creek, 3 mi. NW Hobart Mills, Nevada Co, Calif. U. colony loop greatly expanded downstream. Much fresh work on next higher dam. Set traps at 4. Arrived on seat 6:10, 7:05 large beaver swam down from below deadfall dam & dove into lodge. Acted as if R. forepaw injured. 7:25 beaver appeared in pond, swam over to spillway where my trap was, hesitated, swam back a little, floated, swam over to another spill way, to cross & disappear downstream. 7:40 small one app. in pond, swam toward S. side, fed, entered lodge, left lodge & approached spillway trap but then turned & went S. along dam. Heard but didn't see another one dive into lodge. 7:50 a small one seen swimming under-water to lodge. 8:05 beaver left lodge & swam over to the trap a couple of times and swam right over it! but it didn't go off. Getting very dark. Think trigger had slipped & fallen over a little so that he didn't strike it with his foot. Also heard what have been may beaver "calls" - a hybrid between a cry and a moo. Left at 8:10 & checked traps. No luck, set hooks. Aug 27 More cirro-cumulus clouds & a fair SW breeze. Heard 2 or 3 nutria/nders at 10 AM in tall pines of N. side, saw 2. Began marking trees and noted where beaver went 60' up slope past a dozen 2-inchers and others of different
