J.G.Hall 1953 123 July 31 Sagehen Creek, 3 mi. NW Hobart Mills, Nevada Co. Calif. Bob H. found fresh bear tracks in dust of road this morning 50 yds down from camp and Kensinger + sheepherder took shots at one up at Kiln meadow last night. We spent all afternoon mapping N shore of U. Rockslide colony. Set one trap in vicinity of a new dam below main dam + one in the lower slide. Aug 1 No catches in traps. Tom Kearn + I set one trap above L. Rockslide but left the other one unset, then climbed the old tree to watch from 7:30 to 8:30. Quite a bit of activity, saw one leif + 3 others, probably 2 yearlings + 1 adult. Adult chewed some of the bark off of a 2" asp log lying next to the dam, then spent some time dig- ing for mud to plaster against dam. Also shoved some sticks into dam. This was first time I've actu- ally seen beaver eat aspen bark or dig & carry sod. Spent sometime eating grass and willows. One beaver swam upstream thru ends of blasted dam and around into the channel W of the S dam but, as was case last year, was not
