July 26 Sagehen Creek 3 mi. NW Hobart Mills, Nevada Co, Calif.
saw colony. Judging by the old low
cuttings & high winter cuttings I'd
say this colony had been in ex-
istence since early last fall. Large-
st dam horse-shoe shaped. Work-
ings go clear up to the stream-
side shelf. Upper Falls slide col-
ony 7PM set out a beaver trap
a N end of main dam. Spring
camp 10 PM surprised a bear get-
ting into our garbage & sugar
can and chased him up the
hill a couple hundred yards.
Came back in about 1/2 hr. so
chased him away again; he
was a medium sized brownie.
About 11PM heard what I think
must be marten on our tent roof.
Also heard mice but too big for
a mouse, about like a heavy
July 27 squirrel. Bear had torn up the
spring getting a gallon of milk &
messing things up generally.
Caught no beaver but reset in
same place in evening.
July 28 Road 1/2 mile down from camp 5 PM,
saw marten run across road &
