J.G.Hall 1953 108 July 7 Sagehen Creek, 3 mi. NW Hobart Mills, Nevada Co, Cal. Spring Camp 8:30 AM. Goshawks swooped thru camp about 4' above ground, headed downstream. Didn't make any apparent passes at the local vertebrates. L.colony Lower Colony 10 AM. Again heard "pigmy owl" on way down. The chipmunks are just thrils in amongst the wy- ethia and the path is a deer high- way tho' I've yet to see a deer down here. Continued marking trees at the NW corner of the colony but also did a good many out in the water of the 2 enlarged ponds. Obviously con- siderable cutting has occurred here even since my last visit in June. A view of this grove must be in one of the photos to be taken periodically. 11:45 found 18" gar- ter snake with ? pil. warblers in jaws; grassy meadow area at streamside. This place loaded & y.i. frogs + tad. 1 PM saw & (?) Calliope hummingbird feeding on the colum- bine retar. It had a green back & some rufous in tail. 3 PM Zapus on a wet little island surrounded by beaver ponds & very wet. Here also saw a tremendous toad
