June 27 Sage Hen Creek, 3 mi. NW Hobart Mills, Nevada Co., Calif.
The Roadside colony to have a look at the "mole" colony I stum-
bled on yesterday and any others
possibly not visible from the
path. The mole colony is a dis-
tinct one, not just an upward
extension of the lower one, as there
is a space of no cutting lying
between them. Presumably this
colony was started last fall by
the 2-year olds of the lower col-
ony. Much scattered cutting &
fair dams but no lodge; maybe
blank burrows. Has the earmarks
of a new colony & will be a good
one to watch. Saw no new colonies
between this one & the Roadside one
although sporadic new cuttings
appeared even farther downstream
than the extensions I saw on the
22nd. Saw a W. tanager perched in
a drowned L-pole in middle of Road-
side pond about 3 PM. Wish I
could find the nest. Doe nesting
about in meadow near upper lodge.
Where are the fawns this spring?
