J.G.Hall 1953 June 27 Sage Hen Creek, 3 mi. NW Hobart Mills, Nevada Co., Calif. The Roadside colony to have a look at the "mole" colony I stum- bled on yesterday and any others possibly not visible from the path. The mole colony is a dis- tinct one, not just an upward extension of the lower one, as there is a space of no cutting lying between them. Presumably this colony was started last fall by the 2-year olds of the lower col- ony. Much scattered cutting & fair dams but no lodge; maybe blank burrows. Has the earmarks of a new colony & will be a good one to watch. Saw no new colonies between this one & the Roadside one although sporadic new cuttings appeared even farther downstream than the extensions I saw on the 22nd. Saw a W. tanager perched in a drowned L-pole in middle of Road- side pond about 3 PM. Wish I could find the nest. Doe nesting about in meadow near upper lodge. Where are the fawns this spring? Checked dam at "new" colony but
