June 24 Sagehen Creek, 3 mi. NW Hobart Mills, Nevada Co., Calif.
The meadow is still wet & marshy
in places and there is abundant
sign of past Microtus workings &
winter nests although present
sign not as fresh as 2 weeks
ago. Hillside N of camp 7:45 PM
Bob H. + I took hike up slope &
tried to call birds within range
by the "Pigmy owl" whistle. No
definite success this' clickadees
did come close to watch us. Saw a
joke-horn brule 2 antlers about 1'
long. Also Empidonax oliv-
ed flycatchers, juncos, R.C. h'tet,
nighthawks, robins & heard
what we took to be a hermit
tanager. Returned to camp about
8:45. Another cloudless day.
June 25 Upper Rockslide colony 8:05 PM. Al, Don & Elbert
& 2 drove to upper colony parking place, just in time
to see a beaver carrying willow branches in
mouth from dam to house where he dove
with it. Elbert & I watched till 9 there + Don
& Al went down to the lower colonies but
no more beaver appeared. Hairy wood-
pecker, juncos & robins around but no nigh-
hawks. Full moon. Weather cloudless all day.
