June 21 Sagelen Creek, 3 mi. NW Hobart Mills, Nevada Co., Calif.
Main Camp. Pewees woke me up at 4:30.
Spent most of day doing paper work. An al-
solutely cloudless day from beginning to
end - fitting for longest day in year. Saw
an Empidonax (Hammond's?) fly-
catcher along stream in early after-
noon. Spent some time observing in
the under-water tanks. Only partly
successful in cleaning algae off
windows. Got good looks at some
brookies, small about 4-6" long,
feeding a foot or 2 from the NW
window. Move v. little, only enough
to maintain stationary position an
inch or two above rough rubble
bottom, picked up food particles
carried to them by the current
or occasionally darted aside to snatch
something that floated a few inches
to one side of position. Water
pretty milky still & high - up over
June 22 tops of windows. Roadside colony
where Pte 89 crosses Sagelen 2:45 PM
Red-breasted sapsucker's nest cavity in
big lodgepole 100 yds SW of bridge,
about 10' up. Parent entered, left
& re-entered in space of about
