Sept 12 Diam x ^ x L 1 1 2 1 3 II 1 6 II 1 7 I(L) 1 12 1 Arrived at seat 5:30 PM. 6:15 one seen approaching home underwater and entering without surfacing. 6:23 one seen swimming NW from house to log by seat tree, where it surfaced. It held something (mud?) to its chest with its paws; swam to S end of dam and crossed over when I lost him. Sunset 6:30. 6:48 the same (?) beaver returned over same spot where it had crossed the dam, with a 3' section of a 3" aspen log in tow; took it into house. This is the first time I actually have seen beaver handling anything besides willow. 7:02 shrew(?) ran along pond edge from house to nearly cove. 7:12 beaver left house, swam to some willows at spot he had crossed before & began cutting. Underwater I could observe him kicking & both hind legs simultaneously but kicked & only one leg fthen went over dam
