Sagehen Creek, 3 mi. NW Hobart Mills, Nevada Co., Calif.
Sept. 2. N. dam to at same time an immature
redtail (?) flew down to land in a
deal pine below. Head + neck dark
brown, chest v. light cream, belly
darker. 6:32 medium size beaver
appeared at crossing, swam down to
and over the lowest dam. 6:42 a big
one under water about to enter twin
pines burrow but then went up al-
most to little dam under water
before I lost him. This one plus one ~~
two others appeared just above sta. 4
dam & climbed over. Both fairly big
but one bigger. Next swam down to & over
the big dam, one nuzzled the other as they
swam. This is the only evidence I've seen
so far that one beaver any more than
silently tolerates any other. Climbed
down tree 7:45 + stood on bank for 15
minutes but saw no action so left 8:25.
Walked up & down stream but saw
nothing. Moon full.
Sept 3 While standing on S. dam at 12:10 sur-
veying, I noticed a commotion in the
water 20' upstream. The commotion
approached + materialized into a
group of 4/5 grown Neule, total
