Sagehen Creek, 3 mi. NW Hobart Mills, Nevada Co, Calif. Aug 17 dam is lost to sight. At the same time 2 appear from the house, one goes ashore to cut near the house; the other does likewise on S dam end and a bit and a large beaver appears at the house (4 animals in sight at once). The large one goes ashore & the bit swims back and forth near shore. 8:08 two large and one other beaver are in the water and another appears to dive in the house while another climbs on top of the house to cut. Still another one is now (8:09) feeding by the dead-fall. I have no idea of how many beavers are active now but it is almost surely more than 4. At times the evening's activity of this colony appears to start in the N. fork and gradually work up to the vicinity of the house. 8:10 one enters water with cutting and dives. Another almost surfaces but redives. 8:12 one surf floats & then dives at dead-fall near island. 8:13 all quiet. 8:14 one swims into the small fork W of the blasted dam.
