July 24 Sagemen Creek, 3mi. NW Hobart Mills, Nevada Co, Calif.
additional cutting compared to when
we first photographed about a month
ago. 11:07 saw a water shrew swim-
ing rapidly along under water
about 2" from S shore just above
main dam. He followed shore closely
and made ripples occasionally as
he hit the surface. In fact I
thought it was a small fish "ris-
ing" at first. Surveyed until 1 PM,
took 2 byw & polaroid of house from seat.
Stationed myself in seat 6:45 PM. all clear+
calm & warmer than last night.
Pewes hard at work catching insects
& feeding young; raised big row
when a robin perched on limb just
below their nest. 8:35 beaver ap-
peared & 3" aspen log (peeled) and
forced it into the dam, then disap-
peared over dam. 8:45 doe & twin
spotted fawns ambled slowly down-
stream on N bank, feeding as they
went. Left tree at 9 PM w/o seeing
any more beavers. Stood on S bank
for 20 minutes & scared a doe + at
least one fawn (maybe same trio seen
earlier on N bank). Persepsus at my
