July 22 Sagehen Creek, 3 mi. NW Hobart Mills, Nevada Co., California
to eat for 5 min. 8:18 fled
finished eating, so pulled
some dead sticks from shore
and took them downstream.
Almost immediately another
had taken his place to take
off more dead sticks. 8:23 one
"materialized" in the cove & fed on
willows for 5 min., then took away
dead material. 8:30 yelling on spit,
8:35 adult appeared, cut willows
in cove, bringing them to shallows
before eating them. Cut more wil-
lows which it took downstream &
it (8:40). I left at 8:45 as it was
getting too dark to see. Weather clear
& calm as usual.
July 23 Upper colony 3:50 PM. visited quail
nest: all 10 eggs hatched. Upon seat 6:45
nothing till 8:35 when a yearling (?) ap-
peared between house and dam, dove,
surfaced & green stick which it noded
into dam, then crawled over dam &
disappeared. Reappeared a few sec-
onds later & long cut willow which it
carried back to dive into house
with at 8:38. At 8:41 reappeared & went
