Vicinity S of Fresno, Fresno Co., California
1500 Drive S on Hwy 43 to the Tulare-Kern Co line,
where I set 5D traps along a fence runned E
from the road. Set traps at interface between the
brush along the fence and the open field adjacent.
The field was natural habitat - but full of puddles.
Ground was hard-pack mainly due to recent rains.
Fairly dense Suaeda fruticosa along fence (about
0.7 meters tall). Some Astrigales (polycarpa) and
very few Haplopappus (?). I continued S
on Hwy 46 then turned W on the road to Kern
Wildlife Refuge. Stopped at a patch of natural
habitat on the S side of the road and again set
50 Sherman's. Only shrub is plant Astrigales
Polycarpa about 0.5-1 meter tall and averaging
about 8 meters spacing. Occasional patches of "lawn-
like" annual grasses - few open spaces with
mainly Spermolophus leechyi diggings. Some
apparent Dipodomys holes. I continued W on
the road to the Wildlife Refuge then turned
S on the Hwy bordered the refuge (to the E).
I set 5D traps just S of the Refuge in an
area dominated by Salicornia (subterminalis?)
0.5 - 1.2 meters tall about 5 M average spacing.
A continual "lawn" of low grasses covered substrate.
There were occasional Salsola iberica
