Fresno, Fresno Co., California
20 February
0600 left Pleasant Hill - forgot maps so had to
return - only lost about 15 minutes. Drove via
Hwy
680 and Hwy 152 to Hwy 99, then to Fresno. 0915
arrived Fresno airport. 0930 met with Donna
Knapp of Cal. Fish and Game. Went to main
control tower where we met with Howard Leach
and the pilot ("Bob").
1000 departed Fresno in Fish and Game airplane.
Very clear day - some low, scattered clouds - mainly
in S.E. of Valley (near Bakersfield). We flew
SW over to the Kern Wildlife refuge then S to
the Buttonwillows area - looked at the Kern
River wash area then over Bakersfield and
up to Porterville - we are in search of areas
of "natural habitat" that may contain Kit-Foxes
and Dipodomys. We had lunch in Porterville, then
flew back to Fresno.
1330 I left Fresno (by car), drove S on 99 to
Pixley, then west and south ~10 miles. (see exact
locality later). I set 50 Sherman traps on Pixley
Wildlife Refuge land - some rodent burrows (Dipo?
or Ammo?). Mostly low grass with few open
sandy areas. Recent rains made ground rather
hard-pack. Very few perennials - mainly a few
low, scattered Sueda fruticosa. SEE PHOTO.
