January (cont.)
Mt. Diablo, ca. 2 mi. SE Clayton, Contra Costa Co., California
Descent was very difficult through steep canyon covered with patches of pines and alternating chaparral. About halfway down I found a Gray Fox (Urocyon) carcass - collected baculum and skull. Fox was recently killed and was lying in a crevice between large boulders.
1600 arrived at base of mountain. 1700 arrived automobile. Beautiful hike - we were all rather sore, however. We stopped for a couple of beers at the saloon in Clayton, then returned home.
9 mi. E, 5 mi. N Dos Palos, Merced Co., California
30 January 0800 Departed Richmond heading for Fresno via Walnut Creek, Los Banos (I-5). I am to meet with Howard Leach (Calif. Fish & Game) to survey Land Use maps of the Dept. of Water & Power in Fresno.
At this time also, the Wildlife & Fisheries Societies are meeting in Fresno - Howard is the moderator for one of the discussions and I'll have to catch him between meetings. It was a beautiful day to drive to Fresno. We noted many Ground squirrels (S. beecheyi) along I-5 and at least 10-n Road-killed Barn Owls (Tyto). We turned E on the Los Banos Cutoff and found a road-kill coyote (C. latrans) at the above locality.
