Journal Hafner, M.S. 1979 2 July (cont) Vicinity Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. 1700 arrived at Monterrey airport. Checked into flights to Mazatlan and found ourselves on the waiting list for a flight at 1830! We quickly packed our gear, turned-in the vehicle, and exchanged our tickets. 1900 we boarded the Mexicana flight 731 to Mazatlan. We carried-on the LR-10 liquid N2 container with no difficulties. It was in a white flour-sack, tied at the top and I slung my light jacket over it. We put the container between our seats and covered it with the jacket. There was no metal detector at the airport - which might have led to difficulties. 2030 arrived in hot, smelly Mazatlan. The only vehicle we could rent was a jeep with a canvas cover, so we took it to give it a try. After considerable difficulty, we checked into the Hotel California in Mazatlan ($240 pesos). We later went to the playa and ate dinner. 2300 retired.
