Vicinity of la Ascensión, Nuevo León, México
Hwy 68, drove a few km and stopped
in a small grove of pines. Here we
prepared 12 specimens. 1730 continued south
on Hwy 68 through thinly forested areas
mixed with Yucca and 1830 arrived at
Tia Juana ("San Juanito" on our AAA map). Here
we finally found water to drink - we had
been without thus far this trip! 1900
arrived la Ascensión. It was becoming dark
so we ate dinner in la Ascensión and
drove just east of town to camp for the
night. Cool, humid night. Our bags were
wet in the morning. 0700 drove back through
la Ascensión and into the agricultural areas
west of town. Noted gopher diggings and
we set out a few sets. After looking the area
over, we decided the gophers weren't thick
enough in this area so we drove SE of
town on Hwy 68 through the next large
valley to the SE. As we entered the valley,
we noted occasional signs of gophers, but
the bulk of the valley appeared to have no
gophers. We turned around and headed back
to la Ascensión. We set traps in and around
a corn field about 1 km W. of town. Again,
hovever, the gophers weren't dense enough
