1 km N Bella Unión, Coahuila, México.
By sunset (2000) we had 9 Thomomys bottae,
2 of which were alive (for karyotyping). We drove
into the se outskirts of Saltillo and ate
a very nice dinner. Slept near the trapping
locality - windy, warm night. Clear.
30 June
1 km N Bella Unión, Coahuila, México.
0630 arose and checked traps ... 2 more
gophers. We processed these specimens and
reworked our traps until about 0930. We
caught 6 specimens today, 1 of which was
alive. Having a total of 15 specimens, we
pulled our traps and drove to the nearby
town of Arteaga where we searched for
boxes to hold the live gophers. We finally
found boxes, but these proved to be a
headache for the next ±3 days as the
gophers would escape each evening in the car
necessitating a search of the entire vehicle
each morning. 1100 we headed south on Hwy
57 through a few beautiful valleys and,
eventually, into the desert. We noted numbers
of prairie dogs (Cynomys) in the desert
regions. We turned east on Hwy 60 and
climbed slowly into the Sierra Madre
Oriental. We then turned south on
