Journal Hafner, M.S. 1978 San Pablo, Contra Costa Co., California. 9 September John Hafner and I (including Barron, & Sparky) departed San Pablo 0600 and drove NE via Reno and Winnemucca to Elko, Nevada. We then continued east on Hwy 80 to a point approximately 5 miles west of Halleck. Here we set out 60 sherman traps in sandy areas adjacent to the highway, (about 1mi. E of the north fork of the Humboldt river. There had been rain recently (and it was threatening now) so that the soil was somewhat caked. We placed our lines in and around the small hills to the north of the highway. 1600 we continued east on Hwy 80 to Wells, where we turned north on Hwy 93. We stopped at a point 13 mi. S. Contact amidst low, rolling hills covered mostly with Atriplex, Chrysosthamus and some scattered Sarcobates. We set out 240 traps in four lines, 3 on the east side of the highway and 1 on the west. The soil was powdery in some placed, though caked in most. We slept in JCH's van near the trap site. Cool evening, rain
