San Pablo, Contra Costa Co., California.
9 September
John Hafner and I (including Barron, &
Sparky) departed San Pablo 0600 and
drove NE via Reno and Winnemucca
to Elko, Nevada. We then continued
east on Hwy 80 to a point approximately
5 miles west of Halleck. Here we
set out 60 sherman traps in sandy
areas adjacent to the highway, (about
1mi. E of the north fork of the Humboldt
river. There had been rain recently (and
it was threatening now) so that the
soil was somewhat caked. We placed
our lines in and around the small
hills to the north of the highway.
1600 we continued east on Hwy 80 to
Wells, where we turned north on
Hwy 93. We stopped at a point
13 mi. S. Contact amidst low, rolling
hills covered mostly with Atriplex,
Chrysosthamus and some scattered
Sarcobates. We set out 240 traps
in four lines, 3 on the east side
of the highway and 1 on the west.
The soil was powdery in some placed,
though caked in most. We slept in JCH's van
near the trap site. Cool evening, rain
