Journal Hafner, M.S. 1978 1 km. W Santa Rosa, Cartago Prov., Costa Rica, 8 July (cont) activity. It had rained fairly steadily from about 1030 to 1300 — ; it is now 1400, st overcast but not raining. We are planning to drive into San Jose tonight to set traps at a locality nearby. We really want to get heteromys although our prospects appear slim. We'll return to this locality tomorrow to pick-up our traps plus any gophers to local trappers may have for us. 1430. Departed trap site and drove via Cartago to Tres Rios. We found a road that crossed the river to the south of the highway. We asked permission and then carried the 42 sherman traps about ½ mile past the river (south) and set half of them on a hillside with mixed evergreens, vines, even some yucca. The other half of the traps were set in dense jungle — very dark and thick. We drove into San Jose and ate dinner on the NW corner of town. Slept out just outside of town on the road to the airport. Comfortable night. 9 July Vicinity of San Jose, Costa Rica. 0600 awoke and drove to check traps.
