Since we didn't catch any Heteromys last night
we decided to set the sherman traps near
Tres Rios tonight (a small town between
San Jose and Cartago). This is a known
Heteromys locality.
1600 rechecked traps - no captures. Drove into
Cartago where we bought a bulb for our flashlight,
then we headed back toward Tres Rios. We
found a fairly nice area to set traps along
the highway about 1 km. SE of the turnoff to
Tres Rios. The habitat here is mostly cultivated
coffee and bananas with occasional outcroppings
of native vegetation. We set in and around
coffee trees - 42 traps in total.
1800 Returned to Tres Rios, a small cluttered
town, and had dinner. Later, we drove a
ways out of town and slept-out for the
night. Very comfortable night. Overcast ±60° F.
Tres Rios, Prov. Cartago, Costa Rica.
8 July 0600 awoke and checked traps. Only 1 capture.
