Journal Hafner, M.S. 1978 7 km N, 3 km E Cartago, Prov. Cartago, Costa Rica 7 July (cont) Since we didn't catch any Heteromys last night we decided to set the sherman traps near Tres Rios tonight (a small town between San Jose and Cartago). This is a known Heteromys locality. 1600 rechecked traps - no captures. Drove into Cartago where we bought a bulb for our flashlight, then we headed back toward Tres Rios. We found a fairly nice area to set traps along the highway about 1 km. SE of the turnoff to Tres Rios. The habitat here is mostly cultivated coffee and bananas with occasional outcroppings of native vegetation. We set in and around coffee trees - 42 traps in total. 1800 Returned to Tres Rios, a small cluttered town, and had dinner. Later, we drove a ways out of town and slept-out for the night. Very comfortable night. Overcast ±60° F. Tres Rios, Prov. Cartago, Costa Rica. 8 July 0600 awoke and checked traps. Only 1 capture. (Peromyscus?) Success: 1/42
