We kept all of the live animals and drove to the
Macrogeomys locality (above). We had 2 set-offs,
but no other activity. We set one more set
at a brand-new hole on the hillside with the
growth of cane about 0.3 m tall.
0800 drove into Cartago for breakfast. Walked
through the local market-place where we bought
bananas, cucumbers and carrots. We also
each bought an authentic piece of pottery
(old)
(pre-colombian) at an old shop. We hated
not buying more, but we were restricted by
space on the flight home. The pieces that
John and I bought were picked-up near here
at the Volcan Irazu,
0900 returned to the above locality - no
activity. We reworked the traps then waited.
We noted numerous interesting plants and
animals nearby. Very many epiphytes - small
orchids - many in bloom (blossoms 20mm dia.);
many bromeliads - large & small. Numerous
"rhinoceros beetles" about 15 mm long. Also
noted several Scalesperous-like iguanid lizards-
typical S. occidentalis size but with a
black throat collar and lime-green coloration
dorsally. The tail was even lighter green than
the back. John found a leopard frog (10 cm sv).
