En Route: San Francisco, California, to San Jose, Costa Rica.
5 July
John C. Hafner and I departed San Francisco airport at 0730 and after stop-overs in Los Angeles, California and Guatemala City, Guatemala we arrived in San Jose, Costa Rica. (1900 hrs.)
We went through immigration and rented a vehicle with little difficulty and managed to exchange $10 at the car rental place - exchange rate = 8.54 colones to the dollar. The sun had set at ± 1830 hrs. so we made it into the city by dark. (The airport is approximately 15 km NW of the city). We went into the Centro area and had dinner. We were quite surprised at the high cost of food here. 2100 drove SW of town to the small town of Escazú (7 km.) but could find no place to pull-off the road and sleep. We returned to San Jose and drove about 2 km. NW of the city where we pulled-off and slept outside. Very cool, comfortable evening. Occasional light rain.
