En Route: Athens, Georgia to Butler, Georgia
17 June
0930 John Hafner and I rented a vehicle in
Athens (following The ASM meetings) and departed
Athens 1030. We drove south on Hwy 129
in search of Geomys pinetis. Pocket gophers
are not known to occur north of (approx.)
Macon in Central Georgia. We drove through
Madison to Macon, noting the many beautiful
mansions along the way. We continued S from
Macon on I-75, then SW on Hwy 49 to
Ft. Valley. We turned W on Hwy 96 and
arrived in Butler 1400. Butler is a known
locality for G. pinetis (Merriam 1895!). As
we entered town we immediately noted
fresh diggings. We noted that the
soil had changed from red, rocky earth
to white, sandy earth as we drove south
from Macon. These gophers were digging
in this sandy soil. We set-out 1 set
at this site about 25 meters west of
the eastern city limits of Butler (adjacent
to railroad tracks). We then searched for
other gophers but only found old holes.
It was questioned by the local sheriff
who suggested that we trap at a place
west of town -- we took his advice, but
found no gophers west of town (leave
