Journal Hafner, M.S. 1978 En Route: Arteaga to Pátzcuaro, Michoacán, México. 27 March NE Via Hwy. 37 back to "cuatro caminos" (cont) (south of Nuevo Italia). It was an extremely hot day — the live Orthogeomys fared fine, howerver. We continued N from Nuevo Italia and climbed back onto the SW Edge of the Mexican Plateau. The elevation (now 6,000-7,000 ft) made for much cooler climate. 1730 we drove via Pátzcuaro Uruapan to Pátzcuaro. Along the way we noted an extreme abundance of gopher activity; Our best guess were Pappogeomys and, possibly, Thomomys. We passed through Pátzcuaro at 1730 noting the beautiful and comparatively clean town. We continued south from Pátzcuaro and drove over the pass to Tacámbaro. According to Hall and Villa (1977) and Goldman (1938?) Zygogeomys is supposedly in the vicinity of this pass between Pátzcuaro and Tacámbaro. We decided to trap tonight S. of Tacámbaro for Lionmys pictus and spend tomorrow morning searching for Zygogeomys. We reached Tacámbaro just after dark and spent around 1/2 hour just getting through town. We finally found the road towards Pedernales (to the S of Tacámbaro) and we winded down the steep road for
