3.6 km. (by road) N Arteaga, Michoacán, México,
27 March nearer to Arteaga (above locality). In the last
(cont)
set checked, we caught a ♀ Orthogeomys.
The animal was large, but not as large
as we had expected. She was nearly unfurred,
with an "opossum-like" pelage.
We kept this specimen alive and returned
to town where Patti called her mother to
check on Jim - all's OK. I must call the
airport later to confirm our reservations.
1000 we returned to the above locality and
rechecked traps - 1 Orthogeomys (grandis?)
This was a ♂ and somewhat larger in
size and more sparsely furred. The ears
were also large for gophers - the entire
head gave the appearance of a small
hippopotamus! We reset the extra traps
and returned to Arteaga where we bought
cucumbers for the gophers (and ourselves)
and wrote up field notes.
1230 I called México City to confirm our
reservations for the flight home. 1245 we
departed Arteaga and pulled the traps
at both localities. At the locality 3.6 km
N Arteaga we measured some Orthogeomys
mounds (as we had done for the Tyxogecomys?)
We then departed this region and drove
