26 March (cont)
We noted several small bats hawking insects at the far locality (12 km NE Arteaga). We decided to find a place to camp, so we returned to the small village we had camped near 2 nights ago (La Junta).
As we passed through the village, we noted that the canyon ahead was on fire - so we ended-up sleeping alongside the main highway at the 12 km E Arteaga locality.
About 2100 a VW van full of Mexicans stopped right next to us and asked if we had some oil - we replied no, but told them that Arteaga was only 12 km further. They stuck-around for about half an hour playing their radios very loudly - (they knew we were trying to sleep), They finally flagged-down a truck and got a can of oil. They then left - leaving the oil can and other trash behind. I slept rather poorly - warm evening, cooling off in the early morning hours.
