Journal Hafner, M.S. 1978 En Route Apo to Arteaga, Michoacán, México. 24 March (cont.) small squirrels scampering along the way — about 250 mm total length with pale red pelage. We bought some fruit and soft drinks in Buenavista Tomatlán then headed SE on hwy 120 to Cuatro Caminos (= Nueva Italia de Ruiz on some maps). We then headed south on hwy 37 and drove for several hours through the desert heat to the town of Arteaga, about 66 kms. from the Pacific Ocean. We noted the first signs of pocket gopher (Orthogeomys) mounds at a point about 12 km. (by road) NE of Arteaga. We set out 5 sets at various spots along the road between Arteaga and 12km NE of Arteaga. The gopher digging (with the exception of one) appeared old and dried-out. We set the traps anyway, as we could find no better holes. 1700 returned to Arteaga and ate a nice dinner of nuevos, frijoles, and tortillas. Walked around town for awhile (John and Patti each bought straw hats) then returned to the trap sites. No captures. We had one
