En Route Morelia to Apo, Michoacán, México.
22 March (cont)
In Zamora we re-fueled and bought some sliced meat. Continued SW on road to Los Reyes. Arrived in Apo 1230. Set traps for gophers (Zygogeomys) in the same field that we trapped last August (or late July?). The field was "laid to rest" - a local told me that the field was planted in corn every 2 years then rested for 2 years. The Zygogeomys were very active - their mounds were typically "volcano-shaped" (very steep). The earth was very fine and quite moist about 1cm below the mound's surface. By 1330 I had 9 sets out. We waited much of the afternoon.
1700 I captured one young ♂ Zygogeomys near the E edge of the large field. We kept the animal alive while we walked into the town of Apo - where we had a few beers and bought 2 nice roses (large, round- 20 pesos each = 90¢ U.S.). We walked back to the trap site and rechecked traps - no captures. We slept at about 2100 - cool evening - full moon with a light haze. We hope for better luck tomorrow.
