Journal Hafner, M.S. 1977 2 mi. E Searles Station, 9 mi. NNE Johannesburg, San Bernardino Co., 3200 ft., California. 8 October 0630 awoke before sunrise. Calm morning, few high clouds; cool - ca. 60° F. Checked traps with following results: N 6 D.P. (all released) 4 D.p. (released) 1 P.E. 6 D.p. 6 D.P. (2 released) - 6 D.p. 6 D.p. (all released) 1 A.I. 1 P.E. Total: 32 Dipodomys panamintinus (kept 14) 2 Perognathus longimembris (kept) 1 Ammospermophilus leucurus (released) 35 Success = 35/300 ≈ 12% 0730 ate breakfast, rather disappointed with the low diversity. 0830 slight breeze picked-up. (from west). Scattered high clouds. Spent the warm day walking around. We searched for the gopher population that had existed for several years in the hills to the S; none were there. 1500 decided to change our locality for trapping, so drove to Trona Road then turned S. Went in to Randsburg for supplies.
