Journal Hafner, M.S. 1977 2 mi. E Searles Station, 9 mi. NNE Johannesburg, San Bernardino Co., 3200', California. 7 October 0830 departed Richmond with Darcey, Emily, Julia, and Deb Lawhon. Drove to Pleasant Hill where we left Julia with Darcey's folks. 0930 departed Pleasant Hill and drove S via 680, 580 and Hwy 5 to junction with Hwy 46. Turned east on Hwy 46, stopped for supplies in Wasco, then continued to Hwy 99. Turned S to Bakersfield then east on 58. Beautiful, clear day in the valley. Drove over the Teuchapi Pass then N on Hwy 14 to the above locality (Camp 1). Arrived 1630 and set-up camp. at 1700 began setting Sherman Traps. Purpose of this trip is to get all 4 heteromyid species for seed caching experimentation. We set out 300 traps as follows: N main dirt road. camp I each line = 50 traps 1800 finished setting traps, ate dinner. Had a very relaxing evening. Light breezes all afternoon; few high clouds, ca. 70° F. No moon. Calm, quiet evening. Heard no Anycomys vocalizations.
