En Route: Pachuca, Hidalgo to Llera, Tam., México.
15 August Awoke early and continued north on Hwy 85.
A very long winding road finally brought us
to Tamazunchale on the east side of the
Sierra Madre Oriental. We bought 2 bowls
near this town for about 20 pesos each. The
road leveled-off at this point and we continued
north on Hwy 85 through Ciudad Valles
to the area of Llera about 40 miles S of
Ciudad Victoria. We took a dirt road toward
the west that brought us to the locality:
13 km S, 1 km W Llera, 450 m. Tamaulipas,
México.
At this locality we noted gopher signs
in the cane and bananas (mostly
in the cane). We set-out several sets
apiece and monitored them until well
after dark.
JCB finally captured one Heterogeomys
alive at about 2030. We packed-up and
headed north where we found a nice motel
in Ciudad Valles.
Ciudad Valles, Tamaulipas, México.
16 August We arose and taxostyped the Heterogeomys.
After preparing the skin, we packed-up and
drove NE on 180 (101) toward Brownsville, Texas
