Boca del Monte is the type locality for Thomomys umbrinus umbrinus trapped by Bailey in 1906. There is some question as to whether the town of Boca del Monte in Veracruz is actually the true type locality - however, the Boca del Monte in Veracruz appears to be at a low elevation and probably has no Thomomys - we prefer to stick with the Boca del Monte here in Puebla.
Boca del Monte is a small farming community consisting of a few houses and a train stop. The peak of Volcan Orizaba is at some distance to the NE and we are essentially on the shoulder of the Volcan. The terrain is generally rolling hills with occasional small valleys. After much searching we located a small pocket of Gophers in a narrow strip of Alfalfa about 1/4 mi. west of the center of town. Later searching uncovered a dense pocket of gophers in the small canyon to the immediate N of town.
We set traps (12 sets apiece) in alfalfa fields, road cuts (3 sets) and natural (but grazed) hillsides. JCH captured both normal
