Journal Hefner, H.S. 1977 3.5 km .N , (1.5 km .W) Motzorongo, 370m., Veracruz, Mexico. that we had not the time to wait for success here - especially if this was going to be a replay of our luck at La Cumbre (9-11 August) Apparent Heterogeomys (which is synonymized with (under) Orthogeomys by Russell 1968) don't respond to traps at this time of year. Dolquest caught them here in December, we feel we've put alot of effort into trapping Ortho's and now Heterogeomys and they are essentially "uncatchable" under these circumstances. 1300 packed-up and drove north from Motzorongo until connecting (2 hours later) with Hwy 150 (distance ca. 25 km.). The road was terrible - again a half-done job of paving resulted in a road covered with chuck-holes. We turned west on Hwy 150 and drove, via the toll road (9 pesos) to Orizaba, Veracruz. It rained as we entered town and searched for a motel. We were covered with mud and sweat from the last 4 days of work and gse eagerly awaited a chance to clean-up. 1700 checked into a nice motel near the toll road. Drove into town for dinner after showering. Rain most of the evening. Warm and humid.
