for supplies in Tierra Blanca, a large, dirty town. The roads in Veracruz are, by far,
the worst we've encountered -- to add
insult, we had to pay 7 pesos as
we entered the state (just outside of
Texc tep Lutepec) for the "privilege" of
driving in Veracruz!
We turned west on the "paved" road from
El Amate toward Acatlan. The road was a
total mess of chuck-holes. It took about
2 hours to reach Tezonapa, then, after
several wrong directions from locals, we
were on the correct road for Hotzorongo.
1600 drove through Hot-- Hotzorongo and
about 4 km N where we stopped in the
shade of a large tree and prepared the
glooms (6) from Monte Alban (4 of which
had died from the heat).
1800 we set out sherman traps in hope of
catching Heteromys. We were assisted somewhat
by habitat descriptions in Hall and Dalquest
(Mammals of Veracruz) but we decided to
spread the traps over every possible
habitat type. Since Heteromys is here
at the extreme northern edge of its
range, it is a quite rare animal. We
