La Cumbre 2740 m. Oaxaca, Mexico

traps in an area of heavy Orthogeomys activity. The elevation was 2740 m. and the terrain was extremely sloped toward the south. Most of the Orthogeomys activity was concentrated in the fertile ravines rather than the rugged hilltops. Certain holes were extremely large (ca. 6" dia.) others were smaller. We generally set 2 MacAbee traps in each tunnel (side-by-side) to increase our chances of catching these large animals with such small traps.
The habitat was mixed Conifer-oak woodland, although there were large areas under agriculture (corn). The Orthogeomys activity was high in and around these areas of active agriculture. The soil was reddish in color, somewhat rocky, but apparently quite fertile.
We talked with a local farmer (he was, of course, bare-foot). The local people kill these gophers with sling-shots, then eat them. He says they're good to eat. We had very little activity throughout the afternoon. We each had 8 sets out, so we set the skins out to dry and caught up on the day's field notes. Many heavy clouds, but no rain as of yet.
