As I was setting a trap I noticed a piece of clay pottery - obviously very old, perhaps dating back to the Zapotecs (300 B.C.). We drove into Oaxaca, there had dinner, then returned to Monte Albán, where we slept the night. Clear, warm evening.

9 August 0600 awoke and drove ¼ mi. to check traps.
Results: 6 Liomys irroratus
2 Baiomys musculus

We searched the entire area for pottery and found some very interesting pieces. I also found a stone [illegible] mortar and pestle (which I gave to JCH). Much of the pottery was finely made, although all were were fragments.
0900 departed Monte Albán and drove into Oaxaca for breakfast. Bought some pottery statues then headed 5 from town to the turn-off for Hwy 175 for Tuxtepec. We drove up the steep grade into the Sierra Madre Oaxaca until we reached the town of La Cumbre located at the summit of the western-most chain of the Sierra Madre Oaxaca.
