Journal Hahner, M.S. 1977 En Route: Huajuapan, Oax. to Oaxaca, Oaxaca 7 August 0620 awoke and drove to check traps. Results: crossed out text ea 2 Peromyscus sp. Success: 2/100 We were again disappointed not to have captured Liomys. We drove on south on highway 190 toward Oaxaca. The drive was very tiring, being entirely mountain roads -- narrow at that. 1130 we entered the Valle de Oaxaca and attempted to locate Orthogeomys diggings north of town - no luck. We decided to try a known locality tomorrow (Cerro San Felipe) and to spend this afternoon touring the famous Ruins of Monte Alban. The ruins are located on a hilltop a few miles SW of the City of Oaxaca. We found them extremely fascinating -- large pyramids, (Zapotec and Mixtec cultures 300-600 B.C.) courtyards, sunken ball courts, tunnels, stairways, etc. It rained on-and-off as we walked about the ruins; we decided to return tomorrow morning to get better photos (less people, no rain). 1500 we drove into town.
