En Route: Amecameca, Mexico, to Huajuapan, Oaxaca, Mexico
6 August
(cont)
traveled south of the great Mexican plateau.
The habitat was much drier than I had
expected at this latitude. Cacti and thorn
vegetation dominated.
1500 we climbed through the dry hills
of northern Oaxaca and entered the
puebla of Huajuapan de león. This
was a known Liomys locality (Genoways
1973) so we decided to trap here tonight
and use this afternoon for preparing skins.
We walked around town of a few minutes
and bought 2 inexpensive (5 pesos = 25¢)
woven baskets. After buying some refreshments,
we drove just north of town and prepared
specimens.
1900- Drove to set out sherman traps. Stopped
at a point 5.4 mi. N (by road) Huajuapan
de león, Oaxaca, México, where we set
out 100 sherman traps in the palm, opuntia,
mesquite mountains. The ground was
extremely rocky although there were
patches of annual grasses wherever
soil was sufficient.
2000- Drove into town, had a nice dinner
then camped north of town. Slept out.
Awakened by occasional rain. Nice evening.
