Journal Hofner, H.S. 1977 18 km. S, 12 km. W Toluca, 3500m, México, México. 2 August (cont) areas of bunch-grass about 0.7 m tall and from 0 to 1 m apart. It seemed to me that Pappocomys diggings were most commonly in the areas of dense bunch-grass growth, while Thomomyss seemed to be in the more sparse areas - this was, by no means, a rule. By sunset we had captured: (both SJH numbers) 2 Thomomys umbrinus (1 live). It was getting quite cold, so we built a fire and retired early. Traps were left out. 18 km. S, 12 km. W Toluca, 3500m, México, México. 3 August 0630 awake. Checked and pulled traps. No success. It had been a very cold night (below freezing). From this locality we could easily see the top of Vulcán Toluca, looming above us to the SE. There was no snow that we could see. 0730 departed locality & drove back to Hwy 3, We then proceeded N on Hwy 3 to a point 3.0 mi. N (by road) Raíces. (Also 1.2 mi. S (by road of the intersection of Hwy 3 and Hwy 130.) We decided to try this lower locality instead of the higher one - perhaps gophers are more dense here (ie. Thomomys).
