Journal Hafner, M.S. 1977 En Route: Morelia, Michoacán to Toluca, México, México. 2 August sperm and o reproductive tracts from this rare animal were lost. 1200 departed motel. Ate a nice lunch in Morelia, then drove east on Hwy 15 toward Toluca, México. The road was all but deserted for some reason? The road twisted and turned through high forested mountains until finally settling on the fairly level high plateau at Ciudad Hidalgo. 1500 arrived vicinity of Toluca, México. We turned S at Mexitepec, a small Puebla about 8 km W Toluca. We proceeded about 8 km S then turned west on Hwy 130. We drove about 12 km further then turned due S on the road labeled Hwy 3 (toward Texcaltitlán). (Our AAA road map was quite inaccurate in this vicinity and it is fortunate that we brought Mexican State Maps). At a point 0.5 mi S Raíces we turned SE on the dirt road to Nevado de Toluca. We drove 2.2 mi. (by road) SE until arriving at Parque de los Venados, a large inactive park. We noted both Thomomys and Pappogeomys diggings so immediately set out several sets apiece. The natural habitat was patches of conifer forest with large areas of bunch-grass. Most of the gopher diggings were in these latter
