31 July (cont)
Mt. Tancitaro via the dirt road heading west from approximately 16 km. N. Uruapan to Peribán de Ramos. The road was quite rough and a heavy mid-day rain added to the discomfort. We passed Angahuán which a local "guide" told us served as the base camp for pack trains of tourists to see the volcano (?). Anyway, we finally arrived in Peribán de Ramos where we re-fueled and turned south toward Copetiro. At Copetiro, we drove SE'ly along a fairly nice dirt road to Apo. The road in Apo and soon after was terrible. We managed to get about ¼ mi. SE of town before stopped by a washout.
We parked and walked across a log bridge and then up a steep, muddy road to a point about 0.1 miles beyond the creek. It was raining lightly as we passed some local boys carrying a dead Tree Squirrel (sp?). The fog soon set in as we began setting traps in the fields (meadows) to the east and west of the dirt road. Both meadows had, in the past, been under agricultural use. There was now a fairly thick layer of low grass with occasional small shrubs. Pine trees were fairly sparse, as were the oaks. The rain continued on and off all evening.
