obvious; The animal was somewhat smaller (subadult).
We pulled the gopher sets and 1900 proceeded to set out 100 Sherman traps in the sloping meadow NW of the road. The vegetation was basically soft (moist) chaparral with scattered small pines.
It appeared that part of the field had once been in agriculture.
1930 fog set in. Light rain. We had roasted hot-dogs for dinner. 2100 slept.
31 July
10 mi. SW (by road) Nuevo San Juan, Michoacán, México.
0600 awoke after a nice night's sleep. Checked Sherman traps after re-setting MacAbees.
Results: no captures
Success: 0/100
A local had stolen 2 of our Shermans. People are everywhere and cannot be trusted.
0700 pulled all gopher traps.
Total: 1 Pappogeomys taylorhinus (taylorhinus)
At least, according to Russell (1968), we had a different species of Pappogeomys from that at Pátzcuaro. We drove back through Nuevo San Juan to Uruapan where we turned N on July 37.
We are determined to get Zygogeomys so we'll try the type locality of Nahuatzen (Merriam 1895).
