into Nuevo San Juan. We there asked directions to
(cont)
the main road (now gravel-dirt), and we
were (lead) shown to a man from Minnesota, who
had moved to Nuevo San Juan 6 years ago
with his wife. He was very interested in our
work and told us that he had been
"associated" with the Mus. of Nat. Hist. (U. of
Minn.) several years back... status unknown.
His name was Dick BartholomeSP?. We were
asked inside where we met his wife. We
stayed only momentarily and at 1730 we
drove SW'ly toward Mt. Taucitaro.
1800 the road was in very poor condition. We

eventually stopped at the above locality. We
noted numerous ranches along the way; many
with newly planted orchards. We set out
6 gopher sets apiece in small meadows adjacent

mostly conifer-oak stands, with occasional
areas of moist chaparral. The soil was
very soft, moist and loamy.

near Pátzcuaro. The guard hairs were readily
