En Route: Patzcuaro to Uruapan, Michoacán, México.
We headed west from Patzcuaro, through the wooded, hilly countryside to Uruapan, a rather large city on the SE slopes of Mt. Tancitaro. This town is not at all like Patzcuaro, but rather is crowded and dirty like so many other Mexican towns. We stopped for fuel and supplies then asked for directions to the road that would take us toward Mt. Tancitaro. Of course, directions were terrible, but we eventually stumbled upon the correct road.
We drove to a point about 1 mi. E of Nuevo San Juan where we noted gopher (Pappogeomys) diggings along the road. Our main interest in this area is to search out and trap Zygogeomys, a rather obscure genus of gophers with a very small range. (Including Mt. Tancitaro and NE to Nahuatzen).
We each set out 6 sets and in a short while I captured a Pappogeomys; actually, the animal escaped the trap, but as I was pulling the trap from the hole, the animal returned to plug the entrance. I noted the unisulcate incisors characteristic of Pappogeomys. Since Zygogeomys were apparently not here, we pulled traps and continued swi'ly
