29 July 0600 awoke, very cold and wet... The bags were
soaked. We checked Sherman traps:
Results:
1 Peromyscus sp.
Success: 1/100
The Peromyscus was quite large - on the
order of P. californicus. The animal was
released... We were quite disappointed as we
had hoped to catch Liomyx.
We next checked the gophers traps:
Results: 2 Thomomys umbrinus
Total: 17 Thomomys umbrinus
4 Pappogeomys gymnurus
All Thomomys were small, dark individuals; it
looked as though we had many juveniles. The
Pappogeomys were of 2 color types - 1 very
black, the other deep brown.
The local people collected pitch from the
conifer trees using small (6" dia.) clay pots.
The tree was slashed (for about a meter) and
the clay pot was affixed beneath the
vertical wound. Of course, the pot also
collected much rainwater, but the pitch
