Journal Haber, 4-5. 1977 27 July (cont) Vicinity Guanajuato, Guanajuato, Mexico. Santa Rosa to the floor of a narrow valley. There was much mining activity in the valley (many caves) with every piece of open land (even on steep hillsides) put to agricultural use. We searched the valley and adjacent hillsides for signs of gophers - none were found. The habitat and soil characteristics did not seem suitable for Thomomys. We drove back up the dirt road to Santa Rosa. A large and very old Cathedral sits in the center of the very small settlement. We could find no gopher evidence in the surrounding natural or agricultural vegetation. 1300 departed Santa Rosa. Maps of Area: We drove SW on 110 to Guanajuato then connected with Hwy 45 south of Silao. We now overlooked the beautiful plain of El Bajio which spread out to the NW and SE of us; a vast, level area punctuated with large (Acacia?) trees. The habitat
