of waiting, and several plugged traps, we decided
to try to pad a few MacAbee traps with cotton
and tape in order to catch live specimens. (Since
this race of T. umbrinus is supposedly different
from the animals at Ventura (25 July), we only
cared to get one or two specimens for karyotyping
and tissue analysis - obviously, considering the
low pop. density, we can't get the sample of
20 specimens necessary for a thorough analysis).
The habitat at this locality was basically
Mesquite-Opuntia desert. We were in the
large basin of Arriaga. Vegetation was
sparse, soil rather light in color.
